RAWHIDE WIN 6-4, EVEN SERIES WITH 66ERS

The Visalia Rawhide got three home runs from the offense and 15 strikeouts from four pitchers to post a 6-4 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night at Valley Strong Ballpark. Back-to-back wins for Visalia evened the series at two apiece heading into the weekend.

The two teams traded blows for four innings as Inland Empire went up 4-3, but the Rawhide got a two-run homer from RF Neyfy Castillo in the fifth inning and a solo shot from 3B A.J. Vukovich in the seventh to finish the scoring while the bullpen kept the  66ers quiet. Castillo’s 8th homer of the season gave him the Low-A West lead.

Rawhide starter Brandon Pfaadt went 6 innings and earned the win (2-2)  after allowing 7 hits, 4 ER and a walk while striking out 12. The 2020 5th round draft pick threw 87 pitches, 65 for strikes. He gave up back-to-back homers in the 4th inning to squander a 3-1 lead but otherwise had a very strong outing, recording three Ks in three separate innings.

RAWHIDE WORK THE PITCH COUNT

66ers starter Jack Kochanowicz didn’t fare as well, leaving after 2 1/3 innings  and 66 pitches, 39 strikes. The Angels’ #7 prospect allowed 3ER on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.

A key sequence in the game came when  the Rawhide saw 26 pitches from Kochanowicz in the bottom of the 2nd inning while tying the game up at 1 apiece on a home run from 1B Elian Miranda. Castillo led off the  inning with an 8-pitch AB that ended in a strikeout, but Kochanowicz’ pitch count mounted as the half-inning dragged on before the side was finally retired.

Pfaadt promptly retired the 66ers on just six pitches in the top of the third and Kochanowicz was right back out there after just a brief respite. Rawhide C Lyle Lin led off the  bottom of the third with a four-pitch walk and then 2B S.P. Chen saw 11 pitches in an epic AB that ended with a single to put two on with no outs.

CF Jorge Barrosa doubled in Lin to put Visalia up 2-1. After Kochanowicz struck out Vukovich, he walked Castillo to load the bases and was relieved by RHP Taylor Ahearn. Lin scored on a groundout and Visalia led at that point 3-1.

Pfaadt then surrendered a two-run homer to RF Caleb Scires followed by a solo shot by 2B Jose Guzman to give back the lead before recording six strikeouts over the next 2 1/3 innings to end his night after 6 IP. Visalia was leading 5-4 at that point on the strength of Castillo’s homer and Pfaadt was in line for the win with three innings to go and the Rawhide bullpen taking over.

BULLPEN SEALS IT

Hardly automatic so far this season, the relief corp got the job done tonight. Harrison Francis, Emmanuel Acosta and Liu Fuenmayor (S, 1) each threw a scoreless inning without allowing any hits to nail it down.

Visalia’s record improves to 8-26 and the back-to-back wins have to feel good after the rough start to the season. Inland Empire falls to 15-18 and they are now 4 games behind Rancho Cucamonga in the South division.

ANOTHER STRONG OUTING FOR PFAADT

Brandon Pfaadt went at least six innings for the third straight start and struck out 12 for the second outing in a row. Baseball America noted that Pfaadt’s velocity would dip in the middle innings in college but he threw some of his hardest pitches in the 5th inning according to the stadium scoreboard. He topped out at 93 but I heard earlier in the season that Visalia’s official gun is a bit slow. I have no inside knowledge on that, just something I heard on a broadcast. Regardless, his first pitch of the game was shown as 93 and he hit that mark three times in the fifth before the pitch speeds stopped being displayed.

The seven hits and two homers were season highs, but so were the 12 strikeouts. Pfaadt never appeared to labor in this game and 10 of his 12 strikeouts were swinging. After the back-to-back homers in the fourth he struck out DH Spencer Brown on three pitches clocked at 91, 79 and 92 mph, then threw two more strikes to CF D’Shawn Knowles to induce a groundout to end the inning. Strong comeback from the adversity.

For the season, Pfaadt has walked 6 and struck out 52 over 33 1/3 innings. His WHIP is 0.93 and opponents have batted .195 against him.

CASTILLO, VUKOVICH HEATING UP

Neyfy Castillo touches home plate after his Low-A West leading 8th homer of the season

The two big bats in the middle of Visalia’s batting order are having  more success of late. Neyfy Castillo has homered in back-to-back games and has hit safely in nine of his  last 11 games to raise his batting average over 30 points. His slugging pct. is up to .454, its highest since May 12th.

A.J. Vukovich is 9 for his last 26 and has a slash line of .300/.382/.467 for the month of June. Friday night’s homer was his first since May 29th and he’s hit safely in four straight games.

SOUNDED LIKE A NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK

Valley Strong Ballpark still isn’t filling up to capacity but on this Friday night it sounded like a minor league ballpark is supposed to sound. Lots of energy in the park with constant chatter throughout. The fans made noise for the back-and-forth action and the kids could be heard playing all night. It won’t be up to full capacity until June 22nd but on this Friday night it felt and sounded like they’re almost there.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK MAY 31 – JUNE 6

Inland Empire’s Jeremiah Jackson has been named Low-A West Player of the week and Rancho Cucamonga’s Braydon Fisher has been named Pitcher of the week.

JEREMIAH JACKSON – The Los Angeles Angels’ #5 prospect went 7-for-20 in six games against Rancho Cucamonga and batted .350/.458/.700. On June 4th, Jackson went 2-for-4 with a double and two walks while driving in four runs. Over the week, Jackson had three multi-hit games and drove in eight runs.

BRAYDON FISHER – RHP Fisher pitched twice out of the bullpen last week, logging 7 1/3 IP, allowing 1 H and 3 BB while striking out  12. On  June 4th against IE, Fisher struck out eight over 4 IP. BAA over the two appearances was .043 and Fisher’s WHIP was 0.52.

66ERS EVEN SERIES WITH QUAKES

The Inland Empire 66ers scored in bunches on Friday night with a 14-hit attack that yielded 14 runs to even their series with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. OF D’ShawnKnowles and 3B Jose Bonilla led the hit parade with three hits apiece and SS Jeremiah Jackson added two hits and drove in four runs as the 66ers cruised to a 14-5 victory at Rancho Cucamonga.

The teams have split the first four games of the series and Inland Empire (13-14) is back to within just one game of the first-place Quakes (14-13) in the South division.

Each team scored three runs in the third inning but IE kept coming back for more with 11 runs over the next four innings. Rancho posted single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to finish the scoring.

Jackson, the Angels’ #5 prospect, has been swinging a hot bat in the series, going 6-for-13 with two doubles, a triple and a homer. He’s walked three times against three strikeouts with six runs scored.

#7 prospect Jack Kochanowicz got the start for the 66ers and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 3 H and 1 BB with 3 Ks. LHP Adam Seminaris ( #30 prospect) came on in the fifth and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing 1 R on 3 H and no BB with 4 Ks to earn the win (1-1).

Rancho Cucamonga CF Edwin Mateo had two hits including an RBI double and Sam McWilliams had a two-RBI double.

JACKSON, KOCHANOWICZ LEAD 66ERS OVER GRIZZLIES

Inland Empire SS Jeremiah Jackson belted a pair of two-run homeruns and Jack Kochanowicz went five strong innings to lead the Inland Empire 66ers’ 9-3 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Saturday night. The homestanding 66ers scored six times in the first inning and never looked back as they won their second straight in front of their home fans.

Jackson, the Angels’ #5 prospect, got the 66ers’ 13-hit attack going in the bottom of the first inning when he homered over the right-center field wall following a single by 3B Jeremy Arocho. The 66ers batted around with four more hits and an error behind Grizzlies starter RHP Mitchell Kilkenny. Only the two runs on Jackson’s homer were earned.

Kochanowicz (W, 1-1) went 5 innings and allowed 1R (0ER) on two hits with 0BB and 4Ks. The Angels #7 prospect threw 59 pitches, 39 for strikes in his best outing of the season to this point.

Jackson finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and now has 4 HR on the season. Arocho had two hits, LF Edwin Yon had two hits and 2 RBIs and C Keinner Pina had two hits and scored twice. DH Caleb Scires had two singles and knocked in a run.

Kilkenny rebounded after the rough first inning to complete 4 IP with 2ER on 6H, no BB and 4Ks.

1B Grant Lavigne led the Grizzlies offense with two hits and two RBIs. LF Daniel Montano drove in a run with a single.

The 66ers look for a split in the series with Fresno taking three of the first five games. Inland Empire is in third place in the South division, two games out of first place and 1/2 game behind second-place Lake Elsinore. The Grizzies are now two games out of first place in the North division, trailing Modesto.

GRIZZLIES WIN PITCHERS DUEL WITH IE

Thursday night’s pitching matchup in San Bernadino pitted two of the league’s top pitchers against one another and it didn’t disappoint. Fresno lefty Breiling Euesebio made his fifth start of the season and was opposed by Inland Empire’s Ryan Smith. Both delivered as Fresno’s 3-2 victory was decided late in the game after both had departed.

Fresno’s third straight win kept them a game back of Modesto in the North division.

The Grizzlies got single runs in the 6th, 8th and 9th innings to lead 3-0, then Inland Empire struck for two in the bottom of the 9th but came up just short.

Eusebio went 4 2/3 scoreless, allowing five hits and a walk against 7 Ks. Smith, the reigning Low-A West Pitcher of the Week, worked into the 7th allowing 1 run on 5 hits and no walks with 8 Ks. The one earned run came in on an Isaac Collins triple in the 6th to break the scoreless tie. 2B Mateo Gil knocked in a run in the 8th to double the advantage and C Colin Simpson tripled in the final Fresno run in the 9th for the 3-0 lead.

Fresno’s Fineas Del Bonta-Smith pitched a rocky 9th inning for the save, allowing  two runs  on three hits and a walk. RHP Keegan James (W, 2-0) and RHP Robinson Hernandez combined for 3 1/3 scoreless inning after Eusebio left the game.

MODESTO WINS 8TH STRAIGHT

The Modesto Nuts stayed hot Thursday night with a 10-7 win over Inland Empire to go to a league best 12-3. The eighth straight win along with Fresno’s loss to San Jose put the Nuts two games up in the North division.

Modesto’s 11-hit attack got going early with a solo homerun from SS Noelvi Marte (Mariners #7) in the top of the first inning. Inland Empire pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Kyren Paris‘ RBI triple.

The top of Modesto’s order was back at it in the third with a two-RBI double by Marte to make it a 3-2 game. Paris (Angels #6) doubled in a run in the bottom of the third and  scored the go-ahead run  later in the  inning. But that would be the last lead the 66ers would hold as Modesto scored twice in the fourth, twice in the fifth and three times in the seventh.

Leadoff hitter Victor Labrada went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of doubles for Modesto. His counterpart with IE, CF Elijah Greene, went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with three runs scored.

OPENING DAY 2021

Graphic: MiLB.com

Tuesday is the day, an Opening Day like no other. What was called the California League will shake off a one-year hiatus and get back to business as the Low-A West following MLB’s takeover/shakeup of MiLB. It’s still an eight-team league but things are quite different.

The Lancaster Jethawks are no more, victims of MLBs decision to trim 40 teams and drop down to 120 total. In their place are the Fresno Grizzlies, now a Colorado Rockies affiliate, who had been in AAA since the team’s inception in 1998.

And the Grizzlies aren’t alone in dropping levels as the league as a whole has been moved from the old Hi-A to the new Low-A West.

There are some new experimental rules in play for the 2021 season, with Low-A West being the testing ground for limiting the number of times a pitcher can step off the rubber or try a pickoff to two per plate appearance. That’s right, two. I’m curious to see how this plays out. There will also be a timer for limiting time between pitches, innings and pitching changes.

These are all things we’ll have to get used to and we certainly will. The ballpark experience is going to be a little different at the start with teams limiting the number of fans and other pandemic-conscious precautions in place.

But professional baseball is back in the ballparks and in the communities, just a few days from now, and the fans are ready. The Visalia Rawhide held a season ticket pickup event this past Monday and  drew a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. The rest of the league’s cities undoubtedly have this same energy as the season approaches and teams prepare to take the field for the first time since 2019.

Speaking of the Rawhide, they appear to have the title of Reigning California League Champions for eternity.

So, here we are. No more trips to The Hangar in Lancaster but the Grizzlies will join the fray and, while they will have several rivals close to home, the Low-A West folks will have a chance to get a taste of some of their genius marketing events.

The rosters are being released and on Tuesday it’s go time. I’m in Visalia for their first series against Lake Elsinore, not all six games but I’ll hit a few. Then the following week the Rawhide are in Fresno so I’ll be on board for some of that series. Then I’ll be looking to head out into the great wide-open of the Low-A West. I’ll wear a mask, I’ll wear a space suit, I’ll sit on top of the light tower, whatever the rules are, I’ll be in a minor league ballpark this week. It’s time.
