MODESTO’S 16-HIT ATTACK DOWNS GIANTS

The Modesto Nuts put up five runs in the third inning  Thursday night to go ahead for good in a 10-4 win at San Jose. The visitors used six singles and a double to put up the five-spot, erasing a 1-0 deficit, and added on down the stretch to get their first win of the six-game series.

CF Colin Davis and DH Eric Jones had three hits apiece to lead the Nuts offense, and both had singles to start the 3rd-inning rally. RF Alberto Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double.

The Giants mounted a comeback in the fifth inning with three runs. RF Jairo Pomares launched his 13th HR of the season and that was followed by a Patrick Bailey double and a Tyler Wyatt triple to make it 5-3. LF Harrison Freed brought in another run on a groundout to make it 5-4, but that was it for the Giants’ rally.

Modesto came right back in the top of the sixth with a run on an RBI  single by Jones to make it 6-4. The Nuts tacked on three in the eighth and one in the ninth to make it a comfortable 10-4 victory.

RHP  Connor Phillips started for Modesto  and went four IP, allowing one run on two hits with five walks  and six strikeouts. RHP Leon Hunter pitched the final three innings and got the win (3-0), giving up one hit with no runs or walks and three strikeouts.

San Jose CF Luis Matos had a single and a double and knocked in his 64th run of the year, tied for second in the league.

The Giants (55-32) stayed three games back of Fresno (58-29) and six games ahead of Rancho Cucamonga (48-37) for the final playoff spot.

GRIZZLIES EDGE NUTS FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN

The Fresno Grizzlies returned home from an 11-1 road trip and took the opener from Modesto 2-1 with some opportunistic offense and a strong effort from five pitchers. Fresno scored both of its runs on wild pitches and RHP Toney Locey and four relievers made them stand up for the Grizzlies’ 10th straight win.

The high-powered Grizzlies offense only got four hits but they got what they needed with single runs in the fourth and eighth innings. RF Zac Veen led off the fourth with a bunt single and SS Ezequiel Tovar followed with another, which had to be reviewed to be ruled a hit as he avoided the sweep tag on his way to first. The umpires conferred and called Tovar safe as Veen advanced to second and then went to third on a double-play groundout by 1B Grant Lavigne.  Modesto starter RHP Josiah De Los Santos then threw one to that backstop that allowed Veen to score the first run of the game.

All but one San Jose batter had a multi-hit game on Friday night as the Giants posted a 14-3 win at Modesto. 1b Abdiel Layer went 4-for-6 and C Rodolfo  Bone went 4-for-5 with a HR (1) to lead a 21-hit attack.

The Giants went up big early as they scored nine runs without hitting a home run in the second inning. 15 men came to the plate as San Jose had 10 hits and drew two walks to go up 9-0. Modesto starter Brayan Perez was chased after 1 2/3 having given up 9 earned runs on 12 hits and a walk.

NUTS STRIKE EARLY IN WIN OVER RAWHIDE

The Modesto Nuts stayed hot Friday night and got six runs in the first two innings to cruise to an 8-1 win over the Rawhide in Visalia. The visitors got three in the first and three in the second and went on to win their sixth game in a row including all four in this series.

CF Victor Labrada went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot and RF Alberto Rodriguez was 1-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. RHP Sam Carlson (W, 2-1) went five innings and allowed one run on three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. He threw 105 pitches, 61 for strikes.

Rawhide starter Adrian Del Moral got knocked around over the first two innings as Modesto built a 6-0 lead, but he bounced back for a 1-2-3 third inning and struck out the first two hitters in the fourth before walking SS Noelvi Marte. RHP Enmanuel Acosta came on in relief of Del Moral and gave up a 2-run homer to Rodriguez to put the Nuts ahead 8-0.

Visalia’s only run came when RF Jefferson Espinal walked to lead off the sixth inning and came home on a sac fly by 1B Lyle Lin.

Modesto RHP Matthew Willdrodt went three shutout innings in relief of Carlson, allowing just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts.

Carlson had a lot of traffic with the five walks, three hits and two HBPs, but he was able to keep the Rawhide off the board with the exception of his last batter coming around to score after he left the game. Odd occurrence, Carlson’s first and last batters were both HBPs.

The Nuts are now 30-22 and picked up a game on first-place San Jose in the North division as they now trail by five games with second-place Fresno two games out. The Rawhide suffered its sixth straight loss and have a record of 13-39. They’re 12 1/2 games behind first-place Rancho Cucamonga in the South Division.

Game five of the six-game series starts at 6:30 tonight.
