SEAGER STARTS FAST ON AFL OPENING NIGHT

glendaleDodgers prospect Corey Seager (RC ’14) took the field tonight for his second go-round in the Arizona Fall League, and saw a better result than last year, more similar to what he has done in his stellar minor league career. The shortstop prospect went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored as the Glendale Desert Dogs topped the Mesa Solar Sox by a score of 9-3.

It was a game filled with elite prospects, as per usual in the AFL. Here are some of the notable stat lines from other recent Cal Leaguers in the three openers tonight:

Addison Russell (MES) (STK ’13, ’14) – 1-for-4, 2 RBI
Cal Towey (MES) (IE ’14) – 1-for-1
Darnell Sweeney (GLN) (RC ’13) – 2-for-4, RBI, 2 R
Mallex Smith (SUR) (LE ’14) – 1-for-4
Patrick Kivlehan (SUR) (HD ’14) – 1-for-4, HR
Hunter Renfroe (SUR) (LE ’14) – 2-for-4, 2 Doubles, RBI, 2 R
Trevor Story (SRR) (MOD ’13, ’14) – 2-for-4, 2B

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLThere are just a couple of weeks left in the Cal League season’s first half, believe it or not, and the standings are starting to have serious playoff implications. The Bakersfield Blaze came into the night with a commanding five-game lead over the Visalia Rawhide in the North, having taken two of three at Recreation Park during the week. But the ‘Hide cut into that lead tonight with a late-inning comeback that combined with a shootout loss by Bakersfield at High Desert.

It would be asking a lot for Visalia to make up four games in a couple of weeks, but that is what the Rawhide will try to do in the waning days of the first half.

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLIt’s been another great week of baseball in the California League, with the ball flying despite the fact that the extreme heat hasn’t hit us yet. Tonight’s action was typical of the circuit, with the winners scoring 12, 9, 8, 6 and 3 runs. Only one shootout, as High Desert scored 8 runs in a loss, but the weather is heating up and the offenses are getting in gear as well. Here are the final scores from tonight’s action:

IE 8 – Lancaster 3
San Jose 6 – Visalia 2
Lake Elsinore 9 – Rancho Cucamonga 1
Modesto 3 – Stockton 2
Bakersfield 12 – High Desert 8

Those results have impacted the standing as follows:

The Blaze have a 3-game lead on the Rawhide in the North, with the rest of the division back near the .500 mark or below. Meanwhile, Lake Elsinore has a little separation themselves in the South after tonight’s win and the losses of Lancaster and High Desert. The Storm now have a 2-game lead on the Jethawks.

DIVISION RACES HEATING UP

CLBoth divisions are seeing compelling races for the first-half title with Visalia a game up on Bakersfield in the North and High Desert up by the same margin over Lancaster in the South.

NORTH DIVISION

The Blaze got out of the gates fast and have had two players recognized with Cal League weekly honors in 1B Marquez Smith and P Ben Lively. After last night’s action, Bakersfield has a 14-6 record. But Visalia has shot past them to the top of the North division by winning six straight and nine of it’s last 10 to post a 15-5 mark.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – BEN LIVELY, RHP, BAKERSFIELD
Lively went six innings on Wednesday against Stockton, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out 10. Now 3-0, the Reds’ #9 prospect still hasn’t walked a batter in 17 IP and has 23 K’s and a WHIP of 0.41. The 4th-round pick out of Central Florida (2013) is in his first full season of pro ball and Cal League hitters aren’t having any success against him so far.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – PATRICK KIVLEHAN, 1B, HIGH DESERT
Returning to High Desert after playing 68 games there in 2013, Kivlehan is on his way to posting big homerun numbers, The Mariners’ #12 prospect went 10-for-26 over last week with a double, a triple and five homeruns. Kivlehan had back-to-back two-homer games to take the Cal League lead with 7. He is now more that half-way to his 68-game total of 13 homers last season.

ROAD TRIP: LANCASTER

IMG_4582On Saturday night I made my first trip to Lancaster to see a first-place showdown between the Jethawks and the High Desert Mavericks at The Hangar. The visiting Mavericks had won the first two games of the series to take a one-game lead in the South, including a 9-0 romp on Friday night.
