MODESTO BLANKS VISALIA, MOVES INTO FIRST-PLACE TIE

ModestoA stellar pitching duel in Visalia saw Modesto’s Anthony Senzatela throw eight shutout innings at the Rawhide as the Nuts won a 4-3 decision, forging a tie atop the North Division. Senzatela (7-5), the Rockies’ #11 prospect, struck out seven and allowed five hits without a walk to earn the victory, which gave the Nuts and Rawhide identical 18-7 records in the second-half standings.

Visalia’s Anthony Banda (L, 6-8) was nearly as good, going 6 1/3 and allowing just one run on six hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. But he gave up a seventh-inning run by allowing a pair of one-0ut singles to start a rally that reliever Bud Jeter couldn’t quell.

PALKA’S WALKOFF WINS IT FOR RAWHIDE

RawhideThe Visalia Rawhide have been a powerhouse this season, winning the first-half title in the North Division and getting out of the gate strong in the second half, despite numerous roster changes. But on Monday they were playing to avoid a sweep at home against the Bakersfield Blaze.

It all looked good for Visalia through seven innings as they held a 4-0 lead and starter Ryan Doran and reliever Bud Jeter had put up a string of zeroes. But Bakersfield got up off the mat in the eighth with four runs to tie the game.

RANCHO’S TRINKWON IS MVP OF 9-2 ALL-STAR GAME WIN

asg logoA sold-0ut crowd at LoanMart field in Rancho Cucamonga saw Quakes 2B Brandon Trinkwon earn MVP honors in the California – Carolina League All-Star Game Tuesday night. Trinkwon went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored as the Cal League won by a score of 9-2. 10 Cal League pitchers gave up just two runs with Visalia’s John Omahen earning the win with a perfect inning in the third.

The teams traded runs in the first two innings, but the Cal League kicked it into gear with two runs in the 3rd, three in the 4th and three more in the 6th to make it comfortable.

Just about everybody contributed to the Cal League’s 13-hit attack. Trinkwon’s Rancho Cucamonga teammate Cody Bellinger had a double and two RBI. The Modesto Nuts contributed four hits from Raimel Tapia (1-for-2, run scored), Jordan Patterson (1-for-4, run scored) and Ryon McMahon (2-for-4, 2b, 2 runs scored).

Trinkwon, normally a top-of-the-order hitter in the Quakes’ lineup, did his damage out of the #9 hole. Lancaster’s Brett Phillips led off and San Jose’s Hunter Cole batted second before the big bats in the Cal League lineup. Trinkwon was inserted at the end of the batting order and it paid dividends for RC manager Bill Hasleman.

The All-Star break continues today before a full slate of games on Thursday.

My first chance to see the sizzling Visalia Rawhide this year made clear how strong the team is and why they have a double-digit lead in the standings.  A 13-hit attack including six doubles and a triple produced eight runs, which were more than enough for starter John Omahen as the Rawhide rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Modesto Nuts.  A Rawhide Ballpark crowd of 2,534 made plenty of noise as the home team scored in four of eight turns at bat.
