NEWCOMB, DIXON EARN WEEKLY HONORS

As the Dodgers and Angels played each other to end the week, their affiliates had players recognized as Pitcher/Offensive Player of the Week in the California League.

LHP Sean Newcomb of Inland Empire was named Cal League Pitcher of the Week after throwing six shutout innings at Lake Elsinore, allowing three hits while striking out six and walking just one. It was the last of 13 starts in the Cal League for Newcomb, who was promoted to AA Arkansas.

Rancho Cucamonga’s Brandon Dixon batted .433/.452/1.100 to earn Cal League Offensive Player of the Week. Dixon belted six home runs and drove in 11 runs.

NEWCOMB SHUTS DOWN STORM

IE 66ersLHP Sean Newcomb threw six shutout innings Tuesday night as the Inland Empire 66ers blanked the Lake Elsinore Storm 5-0.  Newcomb (6-1) is the Los Angeles Angels’ top organizational prospect per MLB.com and was the 15th overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

The 66ers got on the board in the third inning when Andrew Daniel doubled in a pair of runs, and that was all Newcomb and two relievers would need. The lefty allowed three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings. Harrison Cooney came on for two scoreless innings before Geoff Broussard closed it out with a perfect ninth inning.

STORM BEATS RAWHIDE IN PITCHER’S DUEL, 3-1

storm_logoThe Lake Elsinore Storm scored two deciding runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 3-1 victory over Visalia, avoiding a sweep in the three-game series. A crowd of 6,096 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore saw the home team break  up a tense pitching duel and knock off the juggernaut Rawhide.

Visalia starter R.J.Hively went six strong innings, striking out 10, but was matched by Lake Elsinore’s Ronald Herrera, who gave up just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings. Gabriel Quintana doubled in a run for the Storm in the bottom of the fourth to break the scoreless tie. In the top of the sixth, Visalia’s Jamie Westbrook singled in a run to tie it up.

FUTURES GAME ROSTERS ANNOUNCED

Inland Empire LHP Sean Newcomb, San Jose RHP Keury Mella and Modesto OF Raimel Tapia have been selected to participate in the Futures Game on July 12 in Cincinnati. Part of the major league baseball All-Star festivities, the Futures Games features some of the best minor league talent in a USA-vs.-World contest.

In addition to these current Cal Leaguers, there are many familiar names from the last couple of years including Matt Olson (STK ’14), Kyle Waldrop (BAK ’13, ’14) and Socrates Brito (VIS ’14). C Kyle Farmer, recently promoted to AA Tulsa from Rancho Cucamonga, and RHP Edwin Diaz, who started with Bakersfield and got promoted to AA Jackson, are also on the rosters.
